Special-needs cat searching for a sratching post to call his own (Berkeley, Calif.)

A message from Wilbur’s rescuers:

“Several months ago we started to notice an orange cat around the neighborhood. He looked a little rough around the edges and we suspected that he was feral, so we started putting out food, hoping he’d come around enough for us to get a better look. Sure enough, he quickly learned that our backyard was a reliable spot for a meal and he began visiting close to every day. Ravenous, he scarfed down the food we put out, but darted away if we tried to approach him. Eventually we got close enough to tell that he was a boy and named him Wilbur.

One day Wilbur showed up with a gash on his head, adding to what appeared to be a long history of injuries. Worried for his safety, we decided to trap him so that we could get him care. Wilbur entered the trap on our first try. Several days later we got him neutered through Fix Our Ferals. We also gave him his first round of vaccinations, flea medicine, and de-worming care.

Much to our surprise and delight, Wilbur has shown in the week that we’ve had him inside that he is open to socialization! A few days into having him he sat on my lap and purred while I scratched under his chin. He’s still very timid and shy, but clearly has the potential to be darling housecat. He just needs a little patience and TLC. Sadly, Wilbur tested positive for FIV. He doesn’t seem to be having any symptoms—just recuperating from a whirlwind few days of vet trips and adjusting to life inside. He’s already a pro with the litterbox!

Although we would love to make Wilbur a part of our family, we have five other cats whose health we can’t put at risk. Wilbur is a beautiful small, orange boy. The vet wasn’t sure how old his is, but we think he’s young, despite a rough start to life on the streets. Please consider giving Wilbur a chance in your home and heart.

A note from Wilbur: I used to live outside and was never sure where my next meal would come from. I’ve had some tumbles and you can see that on my ears. When these people first set me down on what they called a bed, I didn’t know how to walk on it. It was so soft. How quickly things can change! I love cuddling into blankets and pillows now. Even better, the bowl of food keeps getting refilled, so I don’t feel like I have to gorge myself when I eat. I still like to look out the window, but I’m content in this spare bedroom and looking forward to a much more comfortable life from here on out. Meow!

Former stray cat is searching for a safe place to call home (Stockton, California)

An animal lover found “Kitty” on a levee in Stockton on February 15 while she was out walking her cat on a leash - Kitty was starving and followed her big cat Simba home.  Unfortunately, the animal lover cannot keep Kitty, but decided to foster her instead of taking her to the animal shelter, and hopes to find a loving home for her quickly!  Kitty is quite smart and is very loving and playful - there won’t be a boring moment with her!

Kitty is a darling Tortie cat with lovely rings on her tail, and is a petite 7 pounds.  She loves to come over and visit people when they are sitting on the sofa, and soaks up attention!  She is playful and would love to have someone to wave a wand toy for her.  She likes high places, so she would really like a cat tree in her new home.  She likes to sit in front of the computer screen and follow the typing and the “mouse”!  Kitty is very friendly and would be a great family cat.

Kitty has been spayed, tested for leukemia (negative), and given vaccinations for rabies and Feline 4 in 1 (including leukemia vaccine), and received dewormer.  She does not have fleas, but got a preventative flea treatment of Frontline on February 18.  She healed beautifully from her spay, and had her vaccine booster on March 9, 2012.  The vet thinks Kitty is about 10 months old.  The woman who found Kitty will pay for her microchip for the new adopter!

Adopted! Semi-Feral Cat is looking for a special home urgently (Berkeley, Calif.)

Gretchen is an 8-year-old Abyssinian mix looking for a new home.  She currently lives with 3 male cats and as she’s getting older, she is not getting along with them anymore.  She prefers to be the only pet in the home, so she can be The Queen that she knows she is.

Gretchen is semi-feral which means she was born outside and not socialized as a kitten. Because of her early life, she is very bashful and distrusting of humans.  You MAY be able to pet her, but everything is on her terms.  She likes to take her time warming up to humans.  Her first response is to hiss and growl at people until you can win her over.

However, once she trusts you, she enjoys being pet and adores getting belly rubs (again, on HER terms). She also likes playing with dangly string toys and chasing the laser pointer.

Gretchen needs to be an indoor cat as she has been living inside for the last 7 years. Also since she doesn’t get along with other cats, she may get into catfights if she goes outside.

She would be okay living in a small room or studio. She would also do okay in a garage or warehouse where she can have a little sleeping area.

Gretchen is spayed, microchipped, tested negative for FIV/FeLV, and up to date on her shots. She also has had dental work done in the last year.

If you’re interested in learning more about or meeting Gretchen, please email Emily at catsitteremily@gmail.com or call 510-388-7545.

Adopted! Abandoned special-needs goose needs a new pond to call her own (Marin/Oakland, Calif.)

Ms. Goose is hoping for a miracle this week. Read Ms. Goose’s rescue story from our friends at United for Animals:

She’s a Greylag goose (a domestic breed). We rescued her from Lake Merritt yesterday, where she was likely dumped by her former ‘owner’. She has a severe case of bumblefoot and is currently at WildCare where they are trying to keep her relatively comfortable, but she needs a new home and proper treatment ASAP. If you or anyone you know could take in this super sweet and affectionate girl, please contact vegancookiemonster@me.com or WildCare at 415-456-7283. Please spread the word! I’m happy to provide transport from WildCare to her new home.”

Homeless cat is searching for salvation by Sunday (Oakland, Calif.)

Salvation the Stray Cat needs to find a foster parent or forever home by this Sunday. Adoption and foster care inquiries can be directed to Shani of United for Animals ( shanigurl@gmail.com ). Read Salvation’s story from our friends at United for Animals:

When I moved to Oakland this past August there were about 20 stray and feral cats who are thankfully all fixed now. I began feeding them but one in particular caught my eye. She was so beautiful but fearful of me. She would stay on my porch all day sun bathing. The other cats are not nice to her. Slowly I was able to gain her trust. She would allow quick pets but the ‘love looks’ she would constantly give me showed that she was starving for affection. She had a runny nose that slowly got worse. Two weeks ago I was able to trap her & take her to the vet. She is now in a foster home, recovering, and completely changed since being in an inside environment. She purrs loudly, is INCREDIBLY sweet, loves affection, and even rolls on her back for belly rubs. She is very neat with her litter box and a great eater.

If she is forced back outside in the cold, her runny nose will likely come back. She is 5-8 years old and was clearly abandoned by someone years ago. She’s also spayed. She needs a foster home or more importantly, a forever home.

United for Animals is offering to pay for her first vet visit & 1 month’s worth of food & litter.”

Adopted! Elderly horse rescued from squalor seeks a quiet retirement (Turlock, Calif.)

A message from Muggsley’s compassionate rescuer:

“This is Muggsley. Recently rescued where he was in need of a desperate shoeing and food. He was being fed straw and was in 6 inches of waste. He weighs 888 and the vet says an ideal weight is 975 for him. He is an Arabian cross and about 22 years old. He is excellent for the farrier and halters and cross ties like a champ! He also trailers well. He is a sweet old man that needs to enjoy the rest of his life.”
